Daily Discipline – Developing Patience

Hello and Welcome!

It is a new week and a new day and I’m so glad you could join me as we continue our journey toward renewing our minds and improving our self-discipline. If you’re just joining me, you can read my article, A New Self Discipline Journey to learn more about why I am doing this, and how this may benefit you as well.

This week we are going to focus each day on patience. Each day this week I will provide affirmations, scriptures, and daily challenges regarding this topic. Next week will be a new one!

With that said, let’s start our morning together!

BREATHING EXERCISE

Before we begin let us take some deep breaths to calm our mind and prepare us for this mornings discipline.

MUSIC FOR A NEW DAY

I personally like to have some soft music in the background, so if that’s something you like as well below you will find a song you can play for the duration of our time together.

PRAYER For Patience

Now that we’re calm, let us transition to a time of prayer. Over the next few minutes you can pray on your own or feel free to use the following prayer:

Almighty Father,

I offer this prayer to you as I seek guidance during this difficult period in my life. Help me to overcome this hurdle before me, because I know that is all it is: a road bump that is conquerable with You by my side. Grant me the fortitude to remain firm in my efforts, because although I may struggle today, tomorrow will always bring a new day. No matter how much I plea for this tough period to pass, I know I must be patient and keep moving forward to the best of my abilities. With you watching over me, I know that any adversity will be resolved sooner rather than later.

I praise Your name in everything that I do.

Amen

AFFIRMATIONS for Patience

Here are a few affirmations for this morning that you can put in your pocket and carry with you throughout your day.

As you read through them, repeat each one out loud at least three times before moving to the next. Take your time. Close your eyes and say them to yourself as well. Let these words sink into your heart and mind this morning (pulled from Happier Human:

  1. While I am waiting, I practice calmness
  2. I am full of patience and peace
  3. Everything will work out for me and those I love
  4. Answers will come in their own time; I can wait till then

SCRIPTURES For Patience

As Christians, our affirmations should be rooted in the strength and power of God who empowers us and strengthens us to face every trial and every day (both good and bad).

Here are some scriptures that further support the affirmations we just spoke to ourselves. Again, repeat each one three times out loud before moving to the next one. Take your time. Maybe try to commit these to memory as well:

  1. Ecclesiastes 7:8, “The end of something is better than its beginning. Patience is better than pride.”
  2. 1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; it is not arrogant.”
  3. Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
  4. Romans 12:12″Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”

TODAYS CHALLENGE

Our challenge today is this: practice acceptance.

I’m not sure about you, but right now I’m going through quite a fight for patience.

Currently I’m dealing with these things:

  1. Getting my car back from an auto body shop – I hit a deer back in August and the estimated pickup date is October 10th. It’s our family car and we’ve been operating in less than ideal circumstances PLUS my car is in another state being fixed, so I’m having to figure out how to get up there to get my car back when it’s ready.
  2. We are trying to sell our house – our seller backed out on us and so we are back to looking for a new buyer. This didn’t just impact our ability to sell but also our ability to buy.

There’s plenty of other things going on around me, but these two things are pretty high on my list of inconveniences having a major impact on my daily life. The most difficult part is that none of these things are my fault and are completely outside my ability to control.

So what does one do when you can’t control your circumstances and “time is of the essence”?

Practice acceptance.

I realize this is easier said than actually done. I’m living proof of that because I’ve spent the last several weeks waiting impatiently for these things to work out and still waiting.

In my head I know these things are outside my control, but I still find myself getting frustrated and impatient about my circumstances.

At this point I am having to find a way to accept the reality. More importantly, I’m having to stop trying to control the situation and wait on God to do His thing.

If you find yourself in the same boat, try practicing acceptance.

Quote of the Day

Today’s quote comes from author Sheryl Paul:

To be human is to struggle. Eventually we realize that when we sit under the umbrella of “shoulds”—“This shouldn’t be so hard. I should be happy.”—the pain rains down harder. But when we accept the fact that anxiety, depression, loneliness, powerlessness, grief, joy, and exhilaration are all part of the design, we step out into the rain and perhaps even dance a little.
