Morning Discipline 4 – Quality Time

Good morning!

It is a new day and I’m so glad you could join me as we continue our journey toward renewing our minds and improving our self-discipline. If you’re just joining me, you can read my article, “Morning and Evening: A New Self Discipline Journey” to learn more about why I am doing this, and how this may benefit you as well.

With that said, let’s start our morning together!

BREATHING EXERCISE

Before we begin let us take some deep breaths to calm our mind and prepare us for this mornings discipline.

MUSIC FOR A NEW DAY

I personally like to have some soft music in the background, so if that’s something you like as well below you will find a song you can play for the duration of our time together.

PRAYER For Quality Time

Now that we’re calm, let us transition to a time of prayer. Over the next few minutes you can pray on your own or feel free to use the following prayer:

Dear Lord,

Thank You for this day You have made. Thank You for my family and thank You for the breath in my lungs. I am so grateful for all that You have given to me and all that I have experienced in You!  You are a good God! Your lovingkindness overwhelms my heart with peace.

I pray over my marriage right now. I pray that You would continue to guide my spouse and I, maturing us and transforming us to be more like You. I pray that we are able to talk to each other more gently and respond with grace. May Your power flow through us giving us self-control to be faithful and responsible.

I also pray that we can experience more quality time together. I pray that we can escape for a date or a random outing of exploration. I pray that we laugh and love more. Fill our hearts with joy and help our attitudes be easy going.

In Jesus’ name

AMEN!

AFFIRMATIONS for Quality Time With My Spouse

Here are a few affirmations for this morning that you can speak now over your marriage and then put in your pocket and carry with you throughout your day.

As you read through them, repeat each one out loud at least three times before moving to the next. Take your time. Close your eyes and say them to yourself as well. Let these words sink into your heart and mind this morning:

  1. I am grateful for the people who love me.
  2. The love between me and my spouse is stronger than our fights and misunderstandings.
  3. My love for my spouse grows stronger every day.
  4. Our relationship is filled with trust, honesty, open communication, mutual understanding, and most of all love.

SCRIPTURES For Quality Time With God

As Christians, our affirmations should be rooted in the strength and power of God who empowers us and strengthens us to face every trial and every day (both good and bad).

It is important that we spend quality time, but it is equally if not more important that we spend quality time with God.

Here are some scriptures that support the importance of quality time with God. Again, repeat each one three times out loud before moving to the next one. Take your time. Maybe try to commit these to memory as well:

  1. Matthew 6:33, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
  2. 1 Chronicles 16:11, “Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him.”
  3. Psalm 62:8, “O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.”
  4. Colossians 4:2, “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.”

TODAYS CHALLENGE

Our challenge today is this: spend quality time with my spouse and with God.

Quality time is a love language, and for many (if not most) it is a primary way we communicate our love to one another. I know that this is the case for my wife, and not something I have been super good at. I am challenging myself to do better with this.

Likewise, quality time is a love language for God.

It is amazing how quickly the busyness of life can occupy our thoughts and time leaving very little left for the people and our God who matter most to us. It is important that we stop and take time to really focus our attention on them.

This may mean…

  1. Putting down and/or turning off our phones
  2. Shutting off the TV
  3. Stepping away from social media
  4. And more…

…in order to devote our full attention to our spouse and to God.

Today, carve out some quality time for your spouse, or a loved one, and God and use this time to grow closer together distraction free.
