I’m sure you’ve heard from several sources over the last several months that this election is possibly the most important election EVER.
And I tend to agree…but not for the reasons that you may suspect.
You see the typical arguments for why this is an important election range from SCOTUS appointments to further advancements of abortion and religious freedoms being ever more in danger due to the evil that is Hilary Clinton should she become President.
And while those things are certainly legitimate concerns (and important ones as well)…I don’t think they are the most import reasons that this election is the most important election ever.
Before I tell you what I believe to be the reason that this is the most important election ever, let’s run through three (3) basic observations of past elections:
1) Every year we have been told that abortion is an important issue and that if a Democrat gets elected, this will become even more solidified and harder to get rid of.
The fact is, abortion has been in legal existence since 1973 with Roe V Wade. We are now looking at 43 years of abortion being legal in this nation, and very little has changed on the status of abortion whether it is a republican or a democrat at the helm.
My point?
While I want to see abortion end, I don’t see this changing one way or the other no matter who is elected this year. I base this off of 43 years of precedent that has been set. I want to see it end altogether, and count myself an abolitionist…but what I am saying is, while this is important to me as an issue, no matter who is elected (Trump/Hillary/Johnson/Other), abortion won’t be going anywhere.
2) Every time a Supreme Court Justice dies or retires, we are told that we need a Republican president to ensure quality SCOTUS justices. We are told this year is more important because several justices are at an age where they could die.
The fact is, having a Republican president doesn’t ensure good justices. We’ve seen this exemplified in judges like Roberts who was appointed by Bush in 2005 and has been nothing but a total disaster for conservative values.
Nor does having a Republican president guarantee that a justice won’t die from some freak accident.
My point?
While I think it is important that we get good SCOTUS justices in place…we don’t have any historical precedent demonstrating that Republicans are a shoe in for quality conservative judges. Not to mention, Trump (the Republican nominee) thinks his sister is a good pick for the SCOTUS…a judge who is about as liberal as they come and would likely make Ginsburg look like a saint in comparison.
3) Every year we are told that religious freedoms are under attack and under a democrat president we will see those rights diminish quickly.
The fact is, some of the worst rulings and legislation concerning marriage and religious freedom have occurred under a Republican dominated congress.
My point?
They have had opportunity after opportunity to fight against these rulings and legislations that have endangered religious freedoms, and they have been practically silent. If they aren’t willing to fight for it while holding the majority in the House and Senate, what makes you think they will suddenly fight for it under a Republican president?
“So, if you don’t think these things are the most important reasons for this being the most important election EVER, what then do you think makes it the most important election EVER?”
I’m so glad you asked!
The reason this is the most important election EVER is because there seems to be a growing movement among believers away from settling for the status quo, the lesser of two evils, or however you want to word it, and toward a more biblical approach regarding political engagement and electing leaders for our nation.
This is the most important election EVER because the Church is faced with a choice, and this choice is revealing much about the Church, her leaders, her people, and her values.
Hearts are being exposed at an unprecedented rate that I’ve not seen in past elections. Values are being made abundantly clear. What people consider of most importance is being revealed.
Perhaps it’s because I’m the one who has been part of the group making the break away from the norm – or perhaps it’s because I’m taking more notice of this as I work all of this out in my own life. Or perhaps it really is just that…a serious ideological shift taking place.
This election is the most important election EVER because the Church is being sifted. The Church is being stretched in a way perhaps she has not been stretched before in America.
And in the end…the Church is going to look radically different in America. And it has nothing to do with either presidential candidate or the policies they may implement if they become president.
The coming months and years are going to be some of the most interesting and challenging years the church has faced. Not because of forces from the outside, but because of forces from within.
I hope you’re ready!
“As goes the church so goes the nation and as goes the pastors so goes the church” We will get the President we (the church) so justly deserve. . . amen?
Agreed. And this is why I think it is important that pastors who “get it” speak up and warn others of what they are setting themselves up for.
Unfortunately, as I’ve seen first hand, these calls seem to fall on deaf ears. Which is sad to me.
However, I’ve seen many experiencing an awakening, and that is VERY encouraging to me.
