Morning Discipline – A Focus on Better Health

breath word on a white card

Good morning!

It is a new week and a new day and I’m so glad you could join me as we continue our journey toward renewing our minds and improving our self-discipline. If you’re just joining me, you can read my article, “Morning and Evening: A New Self Discipline Journey” to learn more about why I am doing this, and how this may benefit you as well.

This week we are going to focus each day on better physical health. I have decided that to help guide myself through my own journey (and perhaps help you on your own) that it would be best to focus on a specific topic each week. This week is better health. Each day this week I will provide affirmations, scriptures, and daily challenges regarding this topic. Next week will be a new one!

With that said, let’s start our morning together!

BREATHING EXERCISE

Before we begin let us take some deep breaths to calm our mind and prepare us for this mornings discipline.

MUSIC FOR A NEW DAY

I personally like to have some soft music in the background, so if that’s something you like as well below you will find a song you can play for the duration of our time together.

PRAYER For Better Health

Now that we’re calm, let us transition to a time of prayer. Over the next few minutes you can pray on your own or feel free to use the following prayer:

Loving Father,

Touch me now with your healing hands, for I believe that your will is for me to be well in mind, body, soul, and spirit. Cover me with the most precious blood of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ from the top of my head to the soles of my feet.

Amen

AFFIRMATIONS for Better Health

Affirmations are one way we can speak to our minds and set the tone for our day. Sometimes, when the struggle to make it through the day hits us hardest, it takes the words of our lips to penetrate the deepest reaches of our minds and keep us moving forward.

Here are a few affirmations for this morning that you can put in your pocket and carry with you throughout your day.

As you read through them, repeat each one out loud at least three times before moving to the next. Take your time. Close your eyes and say them to yourself as well. Let these words sink into your heart and mind this morning:

  1. My soul and body are blessed and are being renewed.
  2. The Word of God brings health to my body.
  3. The sacrifice of Jesus brings health to my body.
  4. When my heart is at peace my body has life.

SCRIPTURES For Better Health

As Christians, our affirmations should be rooted in the strength and power of God who empowers us and strengthens us to face every trial and every day (both good and bad).

Here are some scriptures that further support the affirmations we just spoke to ourselves. Again, repeat each one three times out loud before moving to the next one. Take your time. Maybe try to commit these to memory as well:

  1. Psalm 103:1-5, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
  2. Proverbs 4:20-22, “My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.”
  3. Isaiah 53:5, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds, we are healed.”
  4. Proverbs 14:30, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

TODAYS CHALLENGE

Our challenge today is this: take the first 15 minutes after getting home from work to breathe and decompress.

I don’t know about you, but when I get done with my job I often times go straight into something else. It would seem that I have convinced myself that staying busy is what’s best. I have learned that being busy, however, doesn’t necessarily mean being productive. And it certainly doesn’t mean that I’m giving preference to my health by constantly pushing myself.

So today, when you get off work and you walk through the doors of your house, take the first 15 minutes to breathe and decompress.

  1. Go sit on the porch and drink a nice cold drink.
  2. Or go to your room, turn on some soft music, lay on the bed, close your eyes, and just breathe.
  3. Go for a short 15 minute walk around your neighborhood.
  4. Or string up your hammock and lay in the shade for a while.

There are so many ways you can decompress to let go of the day. This will not only help your mind rest a little, but it will help your body release stress from the day so you can focus on the things of the evening.

Quote of the Day

I also wanted to include a little quote of the day that maybe you’ll find some inspiration in as well.

Today’s quote comes from Denis Waitley (motivational speaker) and says:

Time and health are two precious assets that we don’t recognize and appreciate until they have been depleted.

Denis Waitley

In other words, don’t let your time and health be depleted before you give them attention. Start now.
